Why SWell?
Teens are navigating more challenges than ever…The relentless pull of social media and smartphones, social disconnection, intense pressure on academics and college admissions, over-booked schedules, and not enough sleep.
In the face of these challenges, many teens are struggling with mental health.
The good news is, we can proactively support our teens’ mental health by helping them learn skills for well-being.
Science is showing us that happiness is not just a matter of circumstances and DNA. Happiness, or well-being in its’ broadest sense, is a set of skills that can be learned.
SWell was created to help teens learn these skills. Specifically, teens learn:
Practical strategies and tools to navigate the stress, difficult emotions, and negative thoughts that are a normal and necessary part of life – but without perspective and coping skills, can lead to mental health issues.
Practices they can adopt to cultivate positive feelings and experiences, like gratitude, balance and joy.
SWell leverages Yale’s Science of Well Being, the most popular class in Yale’s 300 year history, recently adapted for teens.
The course distills more than three decades of research to explain (in simple terms) how our minds work when it comes to happiness. Alongside this perspective, the course offers dozens of practical, evidence-based “pro-tips” teens can use to boost their mental health and well-being.
The course covers topics that high schoolers commonly struggle with, including stress, social comparison, phones and social media, and academic pressure.
SWell brings the Science of Well-Being to high schoolers in a fun and interactive way, with opportunities to practice new skills, relate to their peers, and build connection.
Explore SWell
SWell is based on Yale’s Science of Well-Being for Teens — an online course created and taught by Yale professor and cognitive scientist, Dr. Laurie Santos.
SWell brings the course to life with eight weekly sessions where high schoolers talk about what they’re learning, share their experiences and perspectives, and practice “pro-tips” together. The vibe is casual and fun, with games, prizes and snacks.
Through the conversations and activities, students soak in the valuable information from the course while connecting with each other — and gaining the invaluable insight that they are not alone in navigating the challenges of being a teenager.
